Lighting is more than just a functional necessity; it is an art form, a philosophy, and an essential element of architectural storytelling. Few understand this better than Hervé Descottes, the founder and principal of L'Observatoire International. Established in 1993, the award-winning firm has redefined lighting design, collaborating with some of the world’s most influential architects, from Jean Nouvel to Frank Gehry, and transforming spaces like the High Line in New York City, the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles.

Descottes' career in lighting design spans decades, during which he has become one of the most respected voices in the industry. Originally from France, he developed a deep appreciation for the nuances of light and shadow, refining his craft before moving to the United States, where he founded L’Observatoire International in New York. His work seamlessly blends technical expertise with artistic intuition, making lighting not just a backdrop but a defining element of architectural spaces. He has received numerous accolades for his contributions to the field, solidifying his reputation as a master of illumination.

Beyond his collaborations with top architects and designers, Descottes' philosophy revolves around the idea that lighting should be invisible—an integral part of the space rather than a decorative afterthought. His approach focuses on creating emotional resonance, using light to guide, enhance, and even transform experiences within a space. From museums to public parks, luxury hotels to cultural institutions, his work consistently demonstrates how light shapes perception and atmosphere.

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Descottes to discuss the evolving landscape of lighting design, the delicate interplay of natural and artificial light, and the importance of emotional resonance in his work. Our conversation offered a glimpse into the mind of a designer who believes that the best lighting should feel completely invisible.
