A STUDY IN HOTELS: ABBAYE DES VAUX DE CERNAY
In the heart of the Rambouillet forest, less than an hour’s drive from Paris, lies a hotel that feels plucked straight from the pages of a medieval romance.
Tucked away in the Rambouillet forest, just under an hour from Paris, Abbaye des Vaux de Cernay felt like walking into a dream. As someone who’s always been drawn to history and the charm of old-world romance, I was completely swept away by the abbey’s ivy-covered stone walls, peaceful ponds, and the sense of timelessness that lingered in every corner. It wasn’t just a place to stay—it was like stepping into another era.
A Brief History: Monks, Mystery, and Revival
The abbey’s history is just as fascinating as its surroundings. It was founded back in the 12th century by Cistercian monks and served as a place of prayer and hard work for nearly 600 years. But after the French Revolution, it fell into decline and was eventually abandoned. Fast forward to the 19th century, and the Rothschild family stepped in. Baroness Charlotte de Rothschild, enchanted by the romantic ruins, took on the task of restoring it with care. Today, her vision shines through, combining the abbey’s rich past with all the comforts of a luxurious getaway.

First Impressions: Stepping Into a Painting
Arriving at Abbaye des Vaux de Cernay felt like stepping into a fairytale. Driving down the tree-lined path, I caught my first glimpse of the grand façade mirrored in the still lake—it was absolutely breathtaking. Swans floated gracefully across the water, and the gardens radiated a peaceful, timeless vibe. It was like the world had hit pause, just for me.
Checking in was a breeze. The reception, set in what used to be the monks’ dining hall, had this cozy, welcoming glow with its old stone walls and soft candlelight. The staff greeted me with warm smiles and a calm, friendly energy that fit the abbey’s serene vibe perfectly.
